How to Repair a Transformer Yourself

Simple Tips & Tricks to Try Before Calling in a Professional

A lot more goes into your property's electrical system than just wiring and outlets. The transformer is a crucial component for increasing and decreasing voltage levels to meet varying demands. Sometimes your transformer may break down or malfunction, and while it is usually not a good idea to mess with electricity if you don't know what you're doing, there are some simple tricks you can safely try to get it running again. Knowing these may save you from having to call in a professional electrician to perform a transmission repair.

  • Check the Fuse: Replacing a blown fuse might be enough to resolve the problem without any further complications. Locate the fuse and inspect it for continuity using a multimeter. If necessary, change it out for a new one of the same rating and type.
  • Test the Voltage: Another use for a multimeter is testing the input and output voltage of the transformer. They should match the specified ratings, with any discrepancies indicating the potential for internal faults. Remember to wear appropriate safety gear whenever dealing with voltages to avoid any risk of electric shock.
  • Inspect the Windings: Windings may become damaged over time, a fact that is responsible for a large number of transformer malfunctions. For this fix, you will need an ohmmeter. Again, compare the readings you find with the standard values provided in the transformer's manual and take note of significant deviations.
  • Allow for Proper Ventilation: Let the transformer run for a few minutes, then touch its surface to check for overheating. If it feels excessively hot, the unit may be overloaded beyond its capacity. Clear out plenty of space around it to ensure adequate ventilation is possible.
